Frida Kahlo is considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists. She was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyoacan, Mexico City, Mexico as Magdalena Carmen. In 1946, Kahlo received the National Prize of Arts and Sciences. Less than ten years later, she passed away on July 13, 1954.

Vera Cooper Rubin was born on July 23th, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was one of the first scientists who expressed interest in researching the possibility of large-scale motions of galaxies as distinct from the conventional Hubble expansion. Vera Rubin died in 2016 of natural causes, at the age of 88.

Susan Kare was born on February 5, 1954 in Ithaca, New York to a family of creative and canny geniuses such as her brother, Jordin Kare, who is an aerospace engineer. Kare is an early pioneer of pixel art. She has designed numerous icons, typefaces, and original marketing materials for the Macintosh operating system.

Eileen Chang is a charismatic writer from modern Chinese literature’s rich history. Her life’s creations include novels, essays, and script reviews, among which her novels have the highest renown. She was born during and grew up in troubled times: she lost her family and warmth from childhood, always feeling homeless and alone.

Jill Tarter has made many contributions to science and continues to do so today. In her PhD thesis, Tarter coined the term “brown dwarf,” a cloud of dust and gas which has not been able to start hydrogen fusion, and therefore is unable to become a star. 1989, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Women in Aerospace, and in 2004, Jill Tarter was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine.

Rachel Louise Carson’s career began as an aquatic biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. In the 1950s, she became a full-time nature writer and won several awards for her 1951 bestseller, The Sea Around Us. Today, Rachel Carson is best known for her book that helped end the dangerous use of DDT: Silent Spring. Not only did she raise awareness about the environment and pollution, but she also sparked national interest in the scientific wonders of the sea, all while battling severe health, family, and financial issues.
